FAQs

How do I use the Tallow Butter & Salve?

Apply a small amount to fingertips. Gently press & massage into the skin. A little goes a long way! After a few minutes, you'll notice the tallow absorb, leaving your skin feeling deeply hydrated & restored.

How should I store my Tallow Butter & Salve?

We suggest storing your tallow formulas in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

What does it mean to dry-render tallow?

Our tallow is dry-rendered to preserve its full spectrum of skin-loving nutrients, without the dilution of water or salt. This method keeps the natural fatty acids intact, ensuring you receive the most nutrient-rich tallow possible. Wet rendering can change the chemical composition of the tallow and we want to preserve the integrity of our single origin tallow.

Will tallow leave my skin feeling congested?

Absolutely not! This is a common misconception. Tallow ranks very low on the comedogenic scale, much lower than coconut oil. This indicates that tallow is highly unlikely to congest skin and clog pores. Skin congestion typically results from insufficient exfoliation, allowing dead skin cells to accumulate and eventually leads to a dull complexion from congestion and clog pores. Oil-based moisturizers, like ours, are essential for restoring your skin's natural oil balance. Tallow closely resembles the oil naturally produced by our skin, allowing it to deeply penetrate and hydrate the skin. Tallow is rich in Conjugated Linolenic Acid (CLA), which possesses healing properties for various skin conditions and exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

What are the reasons for not over whipping your butters or salves?

We don't over whip our formulas. We believe in slightly mixing our butters and salves to infuse the added oils, leaving you with a smooth, non-grainy formula to enjoy.  Over whipping introduces air and bacteria, which can give a false sense of volume and introduce contaminants. When whipped products sit on shelves during the summer, they melt, leaving half of the product in jars. As a result, we hand pour our tallow for maximum benefits while giving you more bang for your buck.

What's the shelf life for the Tallow Butter & Salve?

Tallow is shelf-stable if stored in a cool, dry place. We recommend using our tallow within 12 months for optimal quality and results. Additionally, we incorporate Castor, Jojoba and Rosehip Oils into our formulas rather than Olive Oil to avoid potential hazards from rancidity.

Why we use Castor Oil?

USDA Certified Organic & Non GMO-This oil is packed with anti-inflammatory compounds that make it highly effective in reducing inflammation and soothing irritated skin.  The anti-inflammatory properties of this oil extend to its ability to alleviate joint pain and arthritis. Massaging the affected areas with castor oil can help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and provide relief from discomfort which plays a crucial role for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the joints.  Castor oil also possesses natural analgesic properties, meaning it can act as a pain reliever. When massaged into the affected joints, it may help alleviate pain by numbing the nerve endings and promoting a sense of comfort and healing. Lastly, with its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, castor oil can serve as a protective shield against various infections. Applying it to the skin helps create an environment less conducive to the growth of fungi and bacteria, reducing the risk of infections.

Why we use Rosehip Oil?

USDA Certified Organic & non-GMO -  The retinoids in Rosehip oil can help brighten your skin, prevent blackheads, and reduce inflammation. Rosehip oil also contains Linoleic acid, a fatty acid that can aid acne prevention and shrink pimples. Rosehip oil may help treat eczema, an inflammation of the skin that can cause itching and redness.

Why we use Jojoba Oil?

USDA organic, non-GMO, 100% pure cold pressed, unrefined & hexane free. Jojoba helps with collagen production, and it is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It is hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic, exhibiting antiseptic and antibacterial properties. This oil mimics the skin's natural oils, sinks in effortlessly and delivers hydration that leaves you with a dewy finish. It nourishes, revitalizes, and leaves your skin feeling soft and rejuvenated.

Is tallow safe for facial use & children?

Absolutely! Creating this product was driven by the desire to offer something safe for all skin types and ages. Tallow is remarkably beneficial for various skin types, including sensitive ones, as its composition closely resembles that of human skin, facilitating easy absorption. Packed with essential vitamins like A, D, K, E, and B12, Grass Fed & Finished Tallow, particularly sourced from pasture-raised cattle, effectively addresses skin issues such as eczema and diaper rashes. It serves as a healthier alternative to the synthetic creams prevalent in today's market.

Is tallow beneficial for eczema, psoriasis, and rosacia?

Tallow is highly effective in soothing eczema. Speaking from experience with my severe eczema, along with my sons, we can't live without it.  Our tallow formulas are naturally rich in Palmitoleic Acid, which is the most potent antimicrobial agent present in human skin, tallow offers remarkable benefits. Moreover, tallow contains Stearic Acid and Oleic Acid, which collaborate to deeply moisturize, soften, regenerate, and combat inflammation. Stearic Acid further enhances skin suppleness and elasticity. With its nourishing, antimicrobial, and regenerative properties, tallow proves to be a natural remedy for healing eczema, psoriasis, and rosacia. Many individuals suffering from these conditions find that they can discontinue use of their steroid creams after switching to tallow.

Where does your tallow come from?

We source our tallow from The Burns Family Farm in Marysville, OH. We believe in single origin ingredient sourcing. The Chosen Mama's Homestead is dedicated to ethical, conscious choices and transparency in what we are putting on ourselves and our children. The tallow we use is sourced only through the highest of standards. The cattle are grass fed & finished and pasture raised.

How long does it take to ship out my order?

Our goal is to have your order packaged and shipped within 48 hours of receiving. Orders are processed and shipped Monday-Friday.

Why does my cream look different from the last one I ordered?

Each of our formulas are handcrafted in small batches, which inherently renders every cream distinct. Additionally, we've discovered that every batch of tallow is as individual as the animal it originated from. This variation contributes to the slight differences observed between each batch of creams we produce. At times, our creams may exhibit variations in texture, ranging from balm-like to creamy or mousse-like. We embrace this natural variation rather than trying to suppress it. Be assured that irrespective of texture or color variations, we consistently utilize the finest ingredients and maintain the same meticulous ratios for every batch.
